“For the Sake of Our Democracy”, Bi-Partisan Elected Officials Endorse Outlaw Dirty Money Initiative

PHOENIX — Showing growing support for transparency in campaign finance, the Outlaw Dirty Money campaign today announced a bi-partisan list of endorsements from Democratic and Republican elected officials.  More and more citizen groups and elected representatives agree with Corporation Commission Chairman Burns that “Untraceable funds are a serious threat to our democratic values…For the sake of our democracy, we need to end this secrecy.”

Outlaw Dirty Money is proud to announce endorsements from:

Corporation Commission Chairman Bob Burns (R)

Corporation Commissioner Sandra Kennedy (D)

State Senator Martin Quezada (D)

State Representative Noel Campbell (R)

State Representative Mitzi Epstein (D)

State Representative Jennifer Jermaine (D)

These elected officials join a growing number of existing supporters such as Members of Congress (Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, Rep. Tom O’Halleran, Rep. Raul Grijalva, Rep. Greg Stanton), Mayors (Mayor Kate Gallego, Mayor Mark Mitchell), County Officials (Supervisor Steve Gallardo), and State Legislators.

Chairman Burns issued the following statement:

“I am happy to endorse the Voters’ Right to Know initiative.  This straightforward proposed constitutional amendment, if approved by the voters, would end the practice of paying for political ads with anonymous funds, generally known as Dark or Dirty Money. Arizona Public Service Co. in 2014 disguised their multi million dollar contributions by passing them through multiple dark money intermediaries, enabling them to play a significant undisclosed role in electing two members of the Corporation Commission. The laws that allowed that to happen are still in place in Arizona.  Untraceable funds are a serious threat to our democratic values. Voters have no idea what interest is being promoted without knowing the source paying for a political ad. For the sake of our democracy, we need to end this secrecy. This initiative would make the original source of all major political campaign contributions fully disclosable and transparent. I encourage Arizonans regardless of party to sign a petition.”

Outlaw Dirty Money Co-Chair Terry Goddard issued the following statement:

“We are grateful to the growing chorus of elected officials who support our Voters’ Right to Know Amendment.  Our argument is simple: Arizonans deserve to know who is spending to influence their elections. Backed by a volunteer movement of thousands and these courageous elected officials who stand beside us, we’re confident we will make the ballot and pass our important amendment.”

Outlaw Dirty Money is a grassroots movement to amend the Arizona Constitution by citizens’ initiative to secure for every Arizonan the right to know the original source of money being spent on state elections.
